HVAC calibration and industrial process calibrator applications

What Is HVAC?

HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. HVAC systems control indoor temperature, ventilation, and environmental conditions in commercial buildings, factories, hospitals, laboratories, cleanrooms, and data centers.

Process calibrators help HVAC technicians verify temperature controllers, building management systems (BMS), control panels, and automation equipment by simulating sensor signals and checking instrument responses. They are essential tools for system commissioning, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting.

What Is a Process Calibrator?

A process calibrator is a precision test instrument used to measure, generate, or simulate standard electrical and temperature signals in industrial control systems. Depending on the model, these signals may include 4-20 mA current loops, 0-10 V voltage signals, thermocouples, and RTD/PT100 temperature sensors.

Process calibrators allow engineers to verify PLC analog inputs, transmitters, controllers, digital indicators, and other industrial instruments without requiring the actual process conditions to be reproduced. They help identify wiring problems, signal errors, and equipment malfunctions.

Process Calibrator Applications and Uses

  • 4-20 mA Current Loop Calibration: Generate or measure current signals to test PLC inputs, process controllers, transmitters, and indicators.
  • Voltage Signal Calibration: Simulate and verify voltage signals used in industrial automation and control systems.
  • Thermocouple Simulation: Simulate thermocouple signals to verify temperature controllers and display instruments.
  • RTD/PT100 Simulation: Simulate resistance temperature detector signals to test temperature measurement and control systems.
  • HVAC System Maintenance: Verify temperature control signals and analog inputs in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and building automation systems.
  • Industrial Troubleshooting: Support equipment commissioning, preventive maintenance, and fault diagnosis.
  • Instrumentation Verification: Check instrument performance and support quality assurance and maintenance procedures.

Industries and Applications

TECPEL calibration instruments are suitable for HVAC systems, industrial automation, semiconductor manufacturing, pharmaceutical production, food processing, petrochemical plants, energy management, building automation, laboratories, and industrial maintenance.

Temperature Calibration and Thermocouple Testing

Temperature calibrators are used to verify thermocouples, RTD sensors, temperature indicators, and controllers. Electronic temperature simulators reproduce sensor signals, while dry-block temperature calibrators provide a controlled physical temperature source for testing compatible temperature probes.

Thermocouples operate according to the Seebeck effect, generating a small voltage related to the temperature difference between the measuring junction and reference junction. Temperature instruments interpret this voltage using the appropriate thermocouple type and cold-junction compensation.
