Most laboratories are equipped with digital multimeters (DMMs) for measuring DC resistance, but LCR meters for measuring inductance, capacitance, and impedance are harder to find. LCR meters function by applying AC voltage to the device under test (DUT) and measuring the current's amplitude and phase. Capacitive impedance causes the current waveform to lead the voltage, while inductive impedance causes it to lag.
LCR meters are electronic testing devices used to measure the inductance (L), capacitance (C), and resistance (R) of electronic components. Simple testers measure impedance and display the derived capacitance or inductance values. If the DUT has no significant resistance, these readings are quite accurate. Advanced testers measure inductance and Q factor for inductive components, or capacitance and equivalent series resistance for capacitors.
The electrical characteristics measurement methods for capacitors, inductors, and resistors involve connecting the DUT in series with a reference resistor. A digitally generated sine wave signal is applied to the circuit, producing different amplitude and phase voltages. An A/D converter samples these voltages, and digital signal processing (DSP) converts them into vectors. These vectors help calculate the series or parallel equivalent circuit, determining the capacitance, inductance, or resistance value, as well as the dissipation factor for capacitors or quality factor for inductors.
