A thermocouple is an instrument for measuring temperature, based fundamentally on the Seebeck effect. The Seebeck effect states that when two different metallic or conductor materials are joined together, and the junctions are at different temperatures, a voltage is generated. Different metallic alloys produce varying voltage differences across different temperature ranges. The greater the voltage variation per degree, the more precisely the thermometer can determine the temperature. By analyzing the voltage on the thermocouple wire, the temperature at the point where the thermocouple wires meet can be calculated.
- When measuring objects with fast temperature changes, thinner thermocouple wires should be used for quicker temperature response.
- Because the temperature is determined through voltage, if used in equipment that is electrically heated or cooled, the readings can be easily affected by interference.
- In the case of multi-channel thermocouple thermometers, measuring two different heating or cooling devices might result in greater inaccuracies due to equipment-related electrical variances.
- The measurement temperature range of the thermocouple wire depends on the coating material; not all specifications of thermocouple wires can meet the specified temperature measurement range.
- For long-term high-temperature measurements, thicker thermocouple wires should be used to avoid heat-induced softening, leading to inaccurate measurements.
